America invests in its youth: Why Haiti must do the same!

The future of any country depends on its ability to invest and properly educate its youth. Why is America so often referred to as the greatest nation in the world, while Haiti is often referred to as the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere? Why is it that America always talks about its greatness and the urgency to always galvanize and reinvigorate the American Dream, while Haiti always fights to alleviate poverty, corruption, and rebellion? If is not a psychological issue of superiority vs. inferiority, then what is it?

236 years ago, America took its independence against one of the most powerful nations at that time, the Kingdom of Great Britain. Today Americans are proud of the achievement of their founding fathers for giving them their freedom and democracy.  212 years ago, Haiti took its independence against one of the most powerful nations at that time, France. Still, rather than celebrating their ‘liberty, equality, and fraternity,’ Haitians often question if it was not the sins and daringness of their ancestors that make the situation of their nation what it is today.

Yet, the independence of Haiti in 1804 demonstrated the strength of the Haitian people that led the greatest revolution the world has ever seen. The revolution of Haiti was where “black men stood up in order to affirm, for the first time, their determination to create a new world, a free world,” quotes Aimé Césaire, one of the founders of the negritude movement in Francophone literature. The Haitian revolution was the first successful national liberation struggle by black slaves in modern times. It has even inspired the people of South America to rise against slavery and gave hope to African-Americans in our beloved America that they themselves can dream of freedom one day. This revolution led Haiti to be the only state in the world to have a leader as Governor-General of African descent, Jean-Jacques Dessalines in 1804.

This revolution was made ​​possible by a series of remarkable men that led the Haitian people to fight to the death, and especially put together the most significant act of this movement: the Union of Blacks and Mulattoes. The union and bravery made the greatness of the Haitian people. Every Haitian today should be proud of the bravery and unity that has freed the nation from the yoke of slavery. Therefore, Haitians should acknowledge the importance of the untapped resources of its youth, and use that human wealth as it should have done over two centuries ago.

As Haiti confronts challenges of poverty, public debt, and a blockage in the process of development, Haitians must seize this moment to prepare the young generation to alter this unsustainable process. The Haitian government and the Haitian people must create a campaign for a new Haiti—a Haiti where every Haitian who joins together to work for the common welfare and the development of Haiti can have access to the Haitian Dream; a Haiti that welcomes the voice and the interest of the Haitian youth both in Haiti and abroad to provide the national government with unique insights and recommendations from young people regarding the policy that impact our nation’s millions of young Haitians who are indeed the future of Haiti. This campaign must commit itself to serve the millions of Haitians by restoring the Haitian Dream while bringing more opportunity, economic sustainability, and prosperity through union.

The opportunity, economic sustainability and prosperity are values ​​that should define the future of Haiti. After 1804, a large number of Haitians who fought in the revolution remained unsatisfied. The peasants who fought for independence unsuccessfully demanded the partition of the land to reward their efforts. Ever since, the inability of the government to strengthen the economy and to bring the demands of the masses has left the people in poverty.

Poverty, lack of opportunity and initiatives make it difficult for millions of Haitians to break the cycle of dependency and to believe in the Haitian Dream. Haiti must invest in its youth by properly educating them in order to change their mentality. It is only by investing in the youth that Haiti will bring satisfaction to the demands that are more than two centuries old to its population and this investment will lead to a new horizon to the socioeconomic situation of Haiti.

Investing in the Haitian youth will liberate the people and will enlighten the youth who are the future of Haiti to be committed to help Haiti move forward. This investment will create more dynamic young entrepreneurs with innovative ideas that will release Haiti from its lethargy and create a social and economic revolution in the way of that of 1804. This investment will break the cycle of poverty and create an educated, dynamic middle class, faithful in the Haitian Dream, willing to provide to this dream an endless amount of resources for the renewal of Haiti to out-revolutionize a youth social movement, out-re-modernize, and out-rebuild Haiti in this globalized era in the 21^st Century.

Young leaders in every country represent their country with the utmost passion and pride. More than ever, in this globalized era, we need young Haitians to promote the Haitian Dream—a dream that brings opportunity, economic sustainability, and prosperity in Haiti through Union.”

Why I love my Haitian Mother

How lucky I am to have such a wonderful strong Haitian woman whom I call ‘manmi’
My father was already married for ten years until he gave my mom birth
Two babies were born that day, October 16^th, by mistake…
My father never wanted kids in the first place
As he usually reminds his two sons till today
But, indeed, mother knew she had to provide for her babies
She was given somewhere because grandmother could not take care of her…
She was raised by a benevolent old aged woman in a sort of orphanage
Till nowadays mother resides there, and so was I during my childhood
Still can’t comprehend how mother gave us the best education with a $40 US monthly paycheck
Everyone in my native city thought we were rich because of the way she raised us
She gave us love, care, maturity, and all the wonderful things
She always did her best to send us to the best schools
She taught us how to think critically for ourselves since as a little baby
At times she would rather not eat, but her twin sons would always have bread on the table
When she reasons with us, it touches my heart more than anything in the world
When she cries, it breaks my heart as it makes me feel so vulnerable
I always understand her when she explains to us our condition
But, we always make our own way together out of everything and every situation
There was always a solution to our problem, as she cries while talking to us
She has dedicated her life to take care of her sons
She lives to provide for her sons
She got sicker if her sons are sick
She does everything in our very small room so her sons can only focus on studying
Ohh Lord, how I admire my Haitian mother?
She is simply extraordinary beyond measure
Her courage is far greater than Hercules’s
Her wisdom is wiser than Salomon’s
Her vision is clearer than Einstein’s
Her love is deeper than Mother Theresa’s
Her determination to always provide for her sons is stronger than King Arthur’s for his Kingdom
I love my Haitian mother because she is unique
She is special
She has groomed, formed, educated, and made me the person that I am today
She is phenomenal and flawless despite our human flaws
I am honored and proud to have her as my mother
That is my Haitian mother and I am pleased to always love her as she is
Beyond all, I have a commitment
Very soon when I become the owner of every land
I will put her as my queen in the best dress that she deserves
I will crown her as the greatest queen that ever lives
I will show my appreciation, always!
She is the one whom despite all, will always have a special place in my heart
Till my last breathe on planet earth

To the members of my St. Thomas family:

With my sincere gratitude and humility, I am writing to thank the wonderful officials, teachers, friends, staff and students of St. Thomas University. I will never forget St. Thomas as the only university that provided me the opportunity to further my studies. I will especially miss the warm, friendly and familial environment.  

When the earthquake in Haiti occurred, I was on the verge of being homeless, yet St. Thomas University believed in me. St. Thomas University knew that despite my difficult circumstances, desperation after surviving a natural catastrophe, loneliness, lacking a support system to aid in mentally overcoming the crisis, not having an ideal institution to study, St. Thomas University decided to invest in my educational and professional future.

The lessons I learned from St. Thomas University were essential in molding me into a well-rounded gentleman of Christ. I would have not been able to strengthen my faith, beliefs, and Catholic identity if it was not for your university. This spiritual growth has helped me spread God’s message of working together to promote peace and mutual respect to the global family. I will further translate this unique knowledge I received at St. Thomas as a strong foundation that will allow me to implement the principles of spiritual wisdom to synchronize my spirit, mind, and body to help withstand the most pressing global challenges such as poverty, disease, and conflict.

As you may have known, I was interning in the U.S. Congress since January, with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation sponsored by Wal-Mart. During the semester program, I participated in the Political Management Department taking graduate level courses at George Washington University while taking online classes at St. Thomas University. I simply fall in love of Washington D.C. and saw the city as a professional utopia to fast forward my political training.

I feel blessed to share that I was awarded a full scholarship to study Government at Georgetown University for the 2012 Fall semester. This degree will help me strengthen the Haitian Government into a strong and equal law enforcing government that cares for all of its people.

In closing, as the proverb says: “to whom much is given, much is required,” I am committed to always support St. Thomas University in the future as it educates leaders for life. Again, I wanted to take the time to thank you and St. Thomas University for all your great help and support. Words cannot describe how much I will invest back into St. Thomas University in response for financially covering my tuition, room and board, and meal plans.

May the Lord Bless St. Thomas University always!

I Shall Overcome

Why do I have so much to overcome? Why is it me? Why? Why? Why? But, when I think about my difficult situation, I am so fortunate compare to other more unfortunate young people. I am one of the most optimistic persons that I know. Still, it is tough at times. I shall not allow myself to become pessimistic. I am hopeful that I shall overcome anything…

I shall thrive again… I shall get to the mountaintop… I can do it! I shall never allow myself to feel so vulnerable, ever, until I die! ... This situation shows me that I need to do more. I can do better… If I were giving 100% of myself, I now need to give 500%.

I still have no idea what is awaiting me… I am waiting for a lot of news… Lord, I put everything in your hands, for you have the power to make everything possible… Which bad spirit dares to stop me and to take my luck away from me…! I shall overcome!

I welcome this moment… I don’t know what else to say… I am simply confident that I am very close to accomplish greatness…

Youth Haitian Ambassadors Council 5,000 Book Drive

Dear Citizens of the World,

I would like to share with you about the Youth Haitian Ambassadors Council (YHAC). This council is a national Haitian movement for a better Haiti—a Haiti where every Haitian who joins together to work for the common welfare and the development of Haiti can have access to the Haitian Dream; a Haiti that welcomes the voice and the interest of the Haitian youth both in Haiti and abroad to provide the national government with unique insights and recommendations from young people regarding the policy that impact our nation’s millions of young Haitians who are indeed the future of our ‘Darling Haiti’. The council engages the Haitian people, the Haitian Diaspora, and the International community to form a unique coalition that will ensure a brighter sustainable future for the Haitian people with the collaboration of the Haitian youth. This Council also aims to empower and reassure Haiti that the young people are ready to play their role to out-revolutionize a national and international youth social movement, out-re-modernize, and out-rebuild Haiti to overcome any challenges of this globalized era in the 21^st Century.

Like young leaders in every country represent their country with the utmost passion and pride, more than ever, in this globalized era, we need Young Haitian Ambassadors to promote the Haitian Dream—a dream that brings opportunity, economic sustainability, and prosperity in Haiti through our Union.

We presently have our YHAC Representatives and our grassroots team players in Haiti that are working really hard on the ground in Haiti to ensure the sustainability of our project. I want to assure you that our young scholars and leaders in Haiti are competent, honest, trust-worthy, visionary, and determined individuals with a mindset of public service.

In the first phase of our movement we will focus on ‘Education’. That is why we are currently organizing a ’5,000 Book Drive’. The purpose of this book drive is to promote education throughout Haiti to better educate the students.

For our first Book Drive, we will donate the books to the ‘National Library’, a public library that welcomes all youth and adults of Haiti that have a thirst for reading and knowledge. The National Library of Haiti is the largest center for public reading and is a part of the Haitian cultural and intellectual heritage. It protects and defends the Haitian readers and writers with its mission that is well-received by the Haitian government. Donating 5,000 books at the National Library of Haiti is a huge act that will be well-appreciated by any Haitian society and all Haitian officials. This will be the perfect opportunity to share with the Haitian population and national authorities our YHAC mission and our commitment to the Haitian people— particularly, the Haitian youth. It will also be an opportunity to approach the Haitian officials and make them aware of our movement to promote the Haitian Dream, create more opportunities for young people and seek a sustainable development in Haiti. Next, the National Library is the institution that can best serve the Haitian people because of its high visibility and commitment to educate and develop the Haitian intellectuals. Furthermore, this a library is currently facing a serious lack of books because of the economic and budgetary problems of Haiti. Lastly, we are developing a lasting partnership with the National Library which has a view of commitment to the Haitian youth to better educate the future generation of Haiti.

The launch of the Book Drive will officially introduce the YHAC to the Haitian society, the Haitian youth, the Haitian Diaspora, and the international community. This will be the perfect opportunity to share with the Haitian society about the YHAC. We will share with the general public our vision and mission to the Haitian youth. We will explain our commitment to the Haitian youth and our determination to galvanize and reinvigorate the Haitian dream and to promote opportunity and economic sustainability in Haiti. This will also be the time to establish a serious partnership with the Haitian government and the international community to better succeed in our mission.

In this Book Drive we aim to work with several organizations, universities, governmental, public and private institutions to not only help us in our Book Drive, but to strengthen mutual relationships and to enhance our power of working together with them in the arena of community development. Thus, we are seeking for your partnership, help, and support.

We are seeking for books, places to store the books, and hopefully, any kinds of monetary assistance to cover our expenses.

Please, join us to galvanize and reinvigorate the Haitian Dream—to bring opportunity, social mobility and prosperity in Haiti.

Our Human Imperfection

I have not posted any article for a while. It’s been incredibly busy with my congressional internship. As I was thinking, I wanted to briefly share something that is happening with a lot of my friends and I. Hopefully, what I share with you can benefit you or it does not confuse you. (For the sake of not including anyone I shall put all the blame on Monsieur de Bourgeon.)

Monsieur de Bourgeon, a young man incredible beyond measure, a very energetic young man whom insatiably believes he can do anything he wants. Monsieur de Bourgeon, helas, sucks with relationship. Monsieur de Bourgeon, in his aristocratic and elite society detaches himself from the reality of relationship. He does not have any girlfriend. Even worse, he does not create anytime yet for one.

Does everything happen mysteriously? How does the law of the universe operate in relationship? Monsieur de Bourgeon needs to attract the law of attraction and needs to do his part to meet the right person. Perhaps Monsieur de Bourgeon’s selective ‘Monseigneurs’ cannot advise him much on relationships, or perhaps he does not take the appropriate steps to learn about relationships.

Advice:

Monsieur de Bourgeon does not know what to do. Imperfection is part of our human nature. It is our duty to always try to be opened to learn about ourselves and to always seek for improvement and ultimately, excellence.

Since Haiti took its independence in 1804, the views and perspectives of the youth have been absent in the policy making process. Young Haitians both in Haiti and abroad have lacked the ultimate belief that they can unify as one to bring change and reforms in their beloved ‘Darling Haiti’. The genuine alliance of young Haitians is critical if we, as a nation, are to insure the effectiveness of our Haitian Dream which promotes opportunity, economic sustainability, and prosperity. Therefore, we the undersigned, call for the creation of a Youth Haitian Ambassadors  Council to provide the national government with unique insights and recommendations from young people regarding the policy issues that impact our nation’s millions of young Haitians both in Haiti and abroad.

Youth Haitian Ambassadors Council is an assembly constituted of nominated young Haitians to represent the voice and the interest of the Haitian youth both in Haiti and abroad. 

Youth Haitian Ambassadors Council

The Youth Haitian Ambassadors Council would consist of young people selected  from across the country and abroad to:

●       Advise the President, the Prime Minister, the heads of National ministries and  agencies providing  youth services, Members of Congress, and senior National Government officials and proposed and pending legislation, budget expenditures, and other policy matters with respect to youth, particularly disadvantaged youth

●       Gather the views and perspectives of young people across the country

●       Develop a highly competitive educational program to assist unique and selected young Haitian Leaders & Scholars to  advance their training  to better serve Haiti

Structure

The Youth Haitian Ambassadors Council would:

●       Work closely with the Executive Office of the President

●       Work closely with the Haitian Embassies

●       Work closely with the ‘Office of Liaison of the Presidency with the Diaspora’

●       Consist of 30 young people serving three year terms

●       Meet in person not fewer than 4 times each year, and online and via phone not fewer than  8 times each year

●       Select youth ambassadors based on demonstrated competence in public service and  intellectual capacity that can unify Haitians to promote opportunity, economic sustainability, and prosperity in Haiti

Depuis l’indépendance d’Haïti en 1804, la jeunesse n’a jamais eu l’occasion de présenter ses visions et ses perspectives dans le processus de décision politique en Haïti. Les jeunes Haïtiens, tant en Haïti qu'à l'étranger, ont manqué de l’ultime conviction qu'ils peuvent s’unifier pour apporter des changements et des réformes dans leur bien-aimée  ‘Haïti Chérie’. Une véritable alliance entre les jeunes Haïtiens est essentielle de nos jours si nous, en tant que nation, voudrons assurer l'efficacité d’un rêve haïtien qui promeut l'opportunité, la durabilité économique et la prospérité. Par conséquent, nous, soussignés, appelons à la création d'un Conseil des Jeunes Ambassadeurs Haïtiens dans le but de fournir au gouvernement national des aperçus uniques et des recommandations sur les questions politiques qui ont un impact direct sur les millions de jeunes Haïtiens vivant en Haïti ainsi qu'à l'étranger.

·         Recueillir les opinions et les perspectives des jeunes à travers le pays

·         Développer un programme éducatif hautement compétitif pour aider les jeunes leaders haïtiens sélectionnés à poursuivre leur formation afin de mieux servir Haïti

Structure

Le Conseil des Jeunes Ambassadeurs Haïtiens :

·         S’établira dans le Bureau Exécutif du Président

·         Travaillera en étroite collaboration avec les Ambassades haïtiennes

·         Travaillera en étroite collaboration avec le “Bureau de liaison de la Présidence avec la Diaspora”

·         Se composera de 30 jeunes ayant un mandat de trois ans

·         Se réunira physiquement au moins 4 fois par an, et en ligne ou par téléphone au moins 8 fois par an

·         Sélectionnera les ambassadeurs en se basant sur leur compétence démontrée dans le service public et leur capacité intellectuelle à unifier les Haïtiens et à promouvoir l'opportunité, la durabilité économique et la prospérité en Haïti

Desde la independencia de Haití en 1804, las opiniones y perspectivas de los jóvenes han estado ausentes en la elaboración de políticas. Jóvenes haitianos, tanto en Haití como en el  extranjero no han tenido la creencia definitiva de que se pueden unificar en sí mismo para lograr el cambio y la reforma de sus seres ‘Querido de Haití’. La alianza autentica de jóvenes haitianos es fundamental, si queremos como nación asegurar la eficacia de nuestro sueño de Haití, que promueva las oportunidades, la sostenibilidad económica y la prosperidad. Por lo tanto, los dependientes, pedimos la creación de un Consejo de Jóvenes Embajadores de Haití para proveer al gobierno nacional  una visión única y las recomendaciones de los jóvenes en relación a las cuestiones de política que afectan a millones de personas de nuestra nación de jóvenes haitianos, tanto en Haití como en el extranjero.

El Consejo de Jóvenes Embajadores de Haití estaría integrado por jóvenes seleccionados de todo el país y el extranjero para:

●       Asesorar al Presidente, el Primer Ministro, los jefes de los Ministerios Nacionales y Organismos que prestan servicios a la juventud, los miembros del Congreso y altos funcionarios del Gobierno Nacional y la legislación propuesta y en espera, los gastos del presupuesto y otros asuntos de política con respecto a los jóvenes, particularmente los jóvenes desfavorecidos

●       Recoger las opiniones y perspectivas de jóvenes de todo el país.

●       Desarrollar un programa educativo altamente competitivo para ayudar a los jóvenes líderes de Haití y académicos para avanzar en su capacitación para servir mejor a Haití

La Estructura

El Consejo de Jóvenes Embajadores de Haití:

●       Trabajará  en coordinación de la Oficina Ejecutiva del Presidente

●       Trabajará en estrecha colaboración con la Embajadas de Haití

●       Trabajará en estrecha colaboración con la 'Oficina de Enlace de la Presidencia con la diáspora

●       Se constituirá por 30 jóvenes que sirvan en términos de tres años

●       Se reunirán en persona, no menos de 4 veces al año, y en línea y por teléfono no menos de 8 veces al año

●       Seleccionara embajadores de la juventud, basado en la competencia demostrada en el servicio público y la capacidad intelectual, que puedan unificar a los haitianos a promover las oportunidades, la sostenibilidad económica y la prosperidad en Haití

Buscamos promover el sueño de Haití para restaurar la confianza de los jóvenes haitianos que todos deben trabajar juntos para garantizar un mejor futuro sostenible para Haití para las generaciones venideras.

Queremos ver a una Haití, donde cada joven tenga la oportunidad de tener acceso a su sueño  Haitiano y ser capaz de permanecer en Haití para contribuir a una mayor prosperidad del país.

 Quien Somos: Somos jóvenes líderes haitianos y académicos que queremos expandir nuestro potencial como seres humanos, que queremos dejar un legado positivo en Haití, que buscams canalizar el espíritu juvenil en acciones mediante la creación de una agenda nacional para la revitalización del Sueño Haitiano.

Que Hacemos: Traemos recomendación innovadoras de políticas públicas que tiene como objetivo promover la voz de los jóvenes y el interés de los jóvenes en el gobierno nacional.

Por qué lo Hacemos: Creemos que con nutrir a los jóvenes líderes haitianos y académicos de todas las disciplinas de la vida, se elevará la conciencia de los haitianos y crearemos un futuro enraizado en la libertad, igualdad y fraternidad para todos. 

Cómo lo Hacemos: Descubriremos y seleccionaremos aquellos con aspiraciones únicas y de élite que se han comprometido a servir y dar oportunidades a todos los haitianos.

The Loving Beauty of Questioning one’s Soul during the Christmas Holiday

Volunteering in Haiti

The prominent president of the United States, John Adams, once said: “If we do not lay out ourselves in the service of mankind, whom should we serve?” As I wholeheartedly believe in the notion of serving others, during the Christmas holiday, I will embark my soul on a journey that is greater than myself. I will connect with my spirit to question [this City] or what is referred to in Greek as this [Polis]. As a budding philosopher, Socrates resonates into my soul 24/7 as he criticized any mediocre mentality when eloquently articulated: “The unexamined life is not worth living.” We therefore, as the outstanding Dr. Cornel West once said: “need to think critically for ourselves in finding our own voice and affirm our own individuality.”

I am still in the verge of struggling in finding my true mission of living, my ultimate calling in life, and what specifically I need to do to fulfill my destiny; I usually ask myself: “What is my purpose in life?” I am more than warmly open to listen to other people’s understanding of their own fate. I find it quite fascinating to listen to them sharing enthusiastically their mission in life with me. I find that there are some incredible people on this planet that truly care and that dedicate their lives to live the legacy of Gandhi “to be the change they want to see in the world.” I want to be one of these people. I don’t want to go through life and simply waste my time on earth. Before I die I want to make sure that I have contributed to something significant. I don’t want to die and stay in the cemetery regretting everything that I have done. What! No! No! No! I want to be happy to die because before I die, “I will live to the fullest, and I will die empty.”

I feel humbled and blessed to have empowering friends all around the world that feel the same way as I do. It is our time now! This critical period in history needs our contribution. I don’t know about you? But, I am planning to go to Haiti this Christmas Holiday to do everything in my power to create the “Youth Haitian Ambassadors Council” to directly represent the voice and the interest of young Haitians both in Haiti and abroad. I am very global. I am a determinant of the entire human race. In the same way, a man of common sense, a man with good judgment, and values should give more attention and time to serve the underprivileged people. In that sense, I shall do my part. Then, I could die empty. And, I’ll be happy to, because I know that I’ve tried. And, that is all living is about: to be fulfilled in this little bit of time we have, while breathing the good fresh air on planet earth.
